1961年5月出生， 1983年毕业于南京大学生物系，1989年在中国科学院原上海生化所获博士学位，1991年被聘为副研究员，1993年晋升为研究员，1994年起担任博士生导师。1990至1992年在美国纽约州立大学石溪分校生理与生物物理系做博士后，1997年以来曾多次在美国纽约罗切斯特大学药理与生理系和康乃迪克大学健康中心遗传与发育生物学系做访问教授，进行短期访问合作研究。2000年起担任中科院生化与细胞所学术委员会主任，2000年至2002年担任上海生命科学研究院院长特别助理，2002年起担任生化与细胞所常务副所长。
近年来，分别主持了和正在主持973、863、国家自然科学基金、中国科学院和上海市20多个项目的研究。曾获得1995年度国家杰出青年科学基金的资助，目前正在主持一项国家自然科学基金的重大项目和一项中国科学院知识创新工程重要方向项目等，是2002年度"国家重点基础研究发展规划"（973计划）"炎症的细胞信号转导网络及其调控机制"项目的首席科学家。目前正在担任《生物化学与生物物理学报》、《科学通报》、《药理学报》、《实验生物学报》、《生命科学》和《生命的化学》等杂志的编委。

主要研究方向为细胞信号转导的网络构成及其分子机制。研究内容主要包括：建立和应用规模性酵母双杂交筛选及相互检测的系统；选择部分中心蛋白质为靶点开展内源复合物的分离及鉴定，分析生理条件下蛋白质复合物的组分及其动态变化；对新发现的蛋白质相互作用和功能上的新基因进行广泛的各类细胞水平上的活性检测和分析，其中包括以RNAi为手段，在建立的细胞检测系统中比较广泛地对上述功能基因进行功能分析，最终确证其功能。
